  83.     <h2>Selection Tools</h2>
  84.     <p>There are four selection tools available. This page will discuss the 
  85.     first three that are listed below:</p>

  95.     <p>These tools are the primary methods for selecting an area of the image 
  96.     for modification, deletion, copying, or copying. The basic use of these 
  97.     tools is simple, and is similar to the methods used for drawing shapes with 
  98.     the Shape Tools.</p>
  99.     <p>Simply draw a selection by using the left mouse button and dragging the 
  100.     mouse around until the shape is how you want it. To remove the selection you 
  101.     may either single-click anywhere while a selection tool is active, or you 
  102.     may use the <a href="Edit.html#deselect">Edit </a> <a href="Edit.html#PasteInToNewLayer">
  103.     <font face="Times New Roman">→</font></a><a href="Edit.html#deselect"> 
  104.     Deselect</a> menu item (also available in the <a href="Toolbar.html">Toolbar</a>).</p>
  105.     <p>When a selection is active on the image, a dashed outline will be drawn 
  106.     to indicate what area is selected. If one of the selection tools is active, 
  107.     there will also be a blue highlight applied to the selected area. When you 
  108.     switch to another tool, the blue highlight will be removed so that you may 
  109.     get better color accuracy.</p>
  110.     <p>Also, all drawing is confined to the area you have selected. This 
  111.     includes <a href="Effects.html">effects</a> and <a href="Adjustments.html">
  112.     adjustments</a>. This can be very useful if you want to confine your drawing 
  113.     to a specific area of the image.</p>
  114.     <p>These tools also allow you to alter a selection in one of 
  115.     three different combination modes: subtraction, addition, and inversion. 
  116.     These modes are also known as exclusion, union, and exclusive-or ("xor").

  118.     <a href="KeyboardMouseCommands.html">Keyboard & Mouse Commands</a>. 
  119.     Also, selections may be moved, resized, and rotated: see
  120.     <a href="MoveTools.html">Move Tools</a> for more information.</p>
  121.     <p>In order to create a new selection, or to replace the currently active 
  122.     selection, just draw with the left mouse button. The behavior will be 
  123.     similar to the shape tools. You may hold down the Shift key while using the 
  124.     Rectangle Select or Ellipse Select tools to constrain the shape to be a 
  125.     square or a circle, respectively. The following circle selection was made 
  126.     using the Ellipse Selection tool:</p>

  131.     <p>To add on to an existing selection, simply hold down the Ctrl key while 
  132.     drawing a selection. This allows you to easily select two areas of the image 
  133.     that are not connected to each other, or extend a selection to adjacent 
  134.     areas. The following selection was made by 
  135.     drawing a circle selection using the Ellipse Select tool, followed by 
  136.     drawing a square using the Rectangle Select tool while holding down the Ctrl key:</p>

  141.     <p>To remove portions from an existing selection, use the right mouse button 
  142.     instead of the left mouse button when you draw the selection. This lets you 
  143.     carve out parts of the selection that you are not interested in. This lets 
  144.     you easily do selections like the following, which was accomplished by 
  145.     drawing one circle with the Ellipse Select tool, and then drawing another 
  146.     circle inside of it while holding down the right mouse button:</p>

  151.     <p>The third selection combination mode is that of inversion and is possibly by holding down Ctrl while using the right 
  152.     mouse button (instead of the left mouse button) while drawing part of a 
  153.     selection. This will causes active areas of the selection to become 
  154.     inactive, and vice versa. This allows you to create selections like the 
  155.     following, made using the Ellipse Select and Rectangle Select tools:</p>

  160.     <p>In the following 3-part example, a picture was taken in Las Vegas, and then the 
  161.     tall building on the left was selected using the Rectangle Select tool:</p>

  167.     selection by holding down the Ctrl key while using the Rectangle Select

  173.     <p>In the last image of this example, parts of the selection were removed in 
  174.     order to confine the selection to just the building and flag. This was done by 
  175.     using the Lasso Select tool and using the right mouse button to carve out 
  176.     selection areas:</p>
